ORPHANED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN

Children whose parents are severely ill for a long period of time or who live in households where other adults suffer from chronic illnesses can experience significant hardship, as critical illness may reduce the resources available to meet their basic needs and educational requirements.

The states were ranked by the proportion of children who were orphaned or were living in a household where an adult (including the child’s parents) had been chronically ill.
