KNOWLEDGE OF ORS
Diarrhoea remains a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Dehydration caused by diarrhoea is a major cause of illness and death among young children even though the condition can be easily treated with oral rehydration therapy (ORT).
ORT may include the use of a solution prepared from commercially produced packets of oral rehydration salts; a recommended home fluid (RHF), usually a homemade mixture prepared from sugar, salt, and water; any kind of thin, nutritious fluid such as rice water, coconut milk, or watery soup; or simply increased fluid intake.
A mother’s knowledge on the preparation and use of the different oral rehydration solutions (ORS) has proven to be a simple but yet effective response to the dehydration caused by diarrhoea.
